You Mean... I Have to Pay Them Just to Have a Look At My Own Credit Score?!?!

So, I’m sitting at home watching Bloomberg News, knowing that I’d feel a lot better about myself after I raise my credit score (and then think about getting back into the stock market), when this commercial comes on and some guy says “I’m thinking about a number between… It’s your credit score.” I watch and listen a little longer. Then I see the fine print that says something to the effect that you have to pay them money to get the information.

This would always irritate me. Why do I have to pay somebody just to let me look at my own credit score?

Well, after a bit of research I found out that a credit score is not the same thing as a credit rating report. You can get a report of your credit rating free under certain circumstances which I’ll explain in a later post. Your credit score is calculated based on the information listed in your credit report so, of course, you have to pay somebody to do the calculations!
